To succeed as a developer on Itch.io you make horror games. That is where the market is. After discovering this fact, I would focus much of my effort on taking some programming concept I wanted to learn, building a game around that concept, then coating in a layer of horror paint. This way I was able to build a highly engaged audience to give me feedback, reach millions of people across the world, and learn technical programming simultaneously.
